Hillside environment covered in artwork, encompassing numerous murals and Christian bible verses created by local artist Leonard Knight. Featured in 2007 movie ‘Into the Wild’. Self guided – no tickets or reservations necessary.

Painted Canyon/Ladder Canyon Mecca Hills

Formed by convergence of North American and Pacific tectonic plates along San Andreas Fault. Strenuous, self guided hike through multiple slot canyons. Be sure to have a map and plenty of water. Hike with caution. Must have four-wheel drive or similar as dirt road leads to trailhead (prone to flash flooding). Contains ladders and ropes to ascend canyons.

Tahquitz Canyon

Area near Palm Springs on the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians reservation. Home to 60 foot waterfall, rock art, and native wildlife. Ranger-led and self-guided interpretive hikes. Ranger-led hikes approximately 2.5 hours. Self-guided hikes 7:30 am – 3:30 pm.

National park area known for rugged rock formations, stark desert landscapes, and named for region’s distinct Joshua trees. Numerous hiking trails and camping spots. No food or drink available for purchase inside park. No cell service inside park.

Indian Canyons

Ancestral home of the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians, and especially sacred. Ancient trails, rock art, house pits, and ancient foundations still exist. Palm Canyon – moderately graded, good for picnicking and hiking. Andreas Canyon – tranquil one mile hiking loop and year-round flowing stream. Murray Canyon – foot and equestrian trails lead to recreation area. Ranger-led and self-guided hikes.
