A Tribute to the Green Berets: The Inspiration Behind the Cocktail

The story of Horse Soldier Bourbon begins with the Green Berets, a special forces unit in the U.S. Army, who were among the first to enter Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. Nicknamed the “Horse Soldiers” for their use of horses in the rugged Afghan terrain, these brave men played a pivotal role in toppling the Taliban regime, with their exploits becoming the subject of the 2018 film 12 Strong.

To honor their legacy, several retired Green Berets, who had since fallen in love with distilling, created Horse Soldier Bourbon. The bottle design itself is a nod to the America’s Response Monument, a statue at Ground Zero memorializing the Horse Soldiers. When we crafted the Salute to Service Old Fashioned, Horse Soldier Bourbon was the natural choice—a spirit created by those who have served, for those who appreciate the values of sacrifice and honor.

The History of the Ingredients

The Salute to Service Old Fashioned features a unique blend of:

  • Horse Soldier Straight Bourbon: Made with all-American ingredients by a team of retired Green Berets, this bourbon represents craftsmanship and a dedication to quality. Each bottle carries a story of resilience and pride.
  • 1776 James E. Pepper Rye: This rye whiskey pays homage to one of the oldest whiskey brands in America, dating back to the Revolutionary War era. It symbolizes the perseverance and grit of early American distillers.
  • 1738 Remy Martin Cognac: This cognac marks a royal decree of excellence, dating back to King Louis XV of France in 1738. Its smooth, rich profile adds an elegant, refined touch to the cocktail, representing timeless craftsmanship.

Together, these spirits create a layered, complex Old Fashioned that symbolizes the courage, strength, and excellence embodied by the Green Berets.

Why This Blend?

This blend brings together three distinct eras of history. The Horse Soldier Bourbon speaks to modern American bravery, the 1776 Rye represents the foundational grit of early America, and the 1738 Cognac brings in a touch of European refinement and centuries-old tradition. The rosemary simple syrup and bitters add a touch of herbal warmth, evoking the rugged spirit of the battlefield where the Green Berets first made their mark.
